4. SOUNDBITE (English) Julia Frankel, The Associated Press:
"I’m here in the West Bank city of Ramallah. The West Bank is an Israeli-occupied territory where a deadly new reality has emerged for Palestinians ever since the war began in Gaza. As the world has focused on the war in Gaza, Israeli military raids here in the West Bank have stepped up in intensity and frequency and have displaced tens of thousands across the territory. Hundreds of Palestinians have been killed, including young children, in raids that Israel says are meant to root out militancy. That’s as radical Israeli settlers have stepped up attacks on Palestinian towns and have expanded settlements and outposts across the territory. Those outposts are major drivers of violence against Palestinians, according to rights groups. It’s also as military checkpoints and movement restrictions that choke Palestinian movement have multiplied. This has all created a situation where the conditions are dire and bloodshed continues in the West Bank with no end in sight."

STORYLINE:
After the Hamas attack on Oct. 7, 2023 ignited the devastating war in Gaza, a deadly new reality also took hold for Palestinians in the occupied West Bank.
With the world’s attention focused on Gaza, Israeli military operations in the West Bank grew in size, frequency and intensity. The army launched the stepped-up campaign to counter what it says is a growing militant threat.
Here’s a look at where things stand, with data collected by the U.N.’s humanitarian office and Peace Now, an Israeli anti-settlement tracking group.
Since the war in Gaza erupted, the majority of Palestinians killed by Israeli fire in the West Bank have been shot during military raids in villages and towns.
Israel says the operations are needed to stamp out militancy. Many of the dead were militants killed in clashes, or youths throwing stones or firebombs.
Israel is staging a massive offensive across four major refugee camps in the north of the West Bank.
