STORYLINE:
Crowds of Catholic faithful gathered in Buenos Aires to bid farewell to Pope Francis as his funeral was held in the Vatican on Saturday.
An Argentine military vehicle carrying a large portrait of Francis marked the beginning of the massive gathering in the iconic Plaza de Mayo, in front of Buenos Aires Cathedral.
Hundreds took part in a vigil and Mass in the Argentine capital.
The ceremony, which coincided with the funeral held in St. Peter’s Square, was attended by 300 priests from across Argentina, gathered by the Archbishop of Buenos Aires, Monsignor Jorge García Cuerva.
“We want to give Francis a big hug and tell him: ‘Thank you, forgive us, we love you very much,’” García Cuerva told those gathered.
In the emotional speech, García Cuerva moved many of Francis’ followers to tears with his words.
“For that reason, we are going to give the best gift to the Pope — the father of all, the Argentine and Porteño Pope — by committing ourselves to a pact to fulfill his magisterium as Church and society,” he concluded.
Many of those who came to the iconic cathedral remembered Francis, affectionately known as "Father Jorge" to many, as a champion of the humble and a defender of the poor and their needs.
