“It was a really beautiful experience. It was clear that so many people really loved Pope Francis, and the legacy he left for us and not only for the Church, for religious and lay people and all of the world. He left a message of peace especially, so, as Cardinal Re said in the homily, he always said ‘Please pray for me’ and so now, he can pray for us.”

"It was really, really emotional. I did expect that there would be a lot of people who wanted to see him live. We were lucky enough to see him from the colonnade, so we had a really good view. It was greatly emotional. It was a crescendo (of emotions) especially when they lifted the coffin at the end. It is an occasion that I hope won’t happen again so it was very, very touching."

"I felt very close to him as a man, I was fascinated by his persona, so it was an honour for me to take part in this, because I am not from here, I live here, I am from Sicily, so as I am here, I could not miss this opportunity."

"It was very touching, very sombre, but yet still a rejoicing that he has gone on to the Father out of all his illness and pain. We will miss him dearly. He was such a sweet soul, very kind. I’ve met him several times and (he was) always very welcoming, (he had) a beautiful smile."

STORYLINE:
Some 250,000 people flocked to the funeral Mass of Pope Francis at the Vatican on Saturday.
Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, the 91-year-old dean of the College of Cardinals, eulogized Francis as a pope of the people, a pastor who knew how to communicate to the “least among us” with an informal, spontaneous style.
Attendees said taking part in the funeral was a very touching experience.
"It was very touching, very sombre, but yet still a rejoicing that he has gone on to the Father out of all his illness and pain. We will miss him dearly. He was such a sweet soul, very kind," said Therese Curry, from the Bahamas, speaking from outside the Perugino Gate.
The Argentine pontiff choreographed the funeral himself when he revised and simplified the Vatican’s rites and rituals last year. His aim was to emphasize the pope’s role as a mere pastor and not “a powerful man of this world.”
It was a reflection of Francis’ 12-year project to radically reform the papacy, to stress priests as servants and to construct “a poor church for the poor.” He articulated the mission just days after his 2013 election and it explained the name he chose as pope, honoring St. Francis of Assisi “who had the heart of the poor of the world,” according to the official decree of the pope’s life that was placed in his coffin before it was sealed Friday night.
