STORYLINE:
Catholic faithful gathered in front of the papal basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome on Friday night for a special rosary prayer ahead of Pope Francis’ funeral.
Following his will, the pontiff, who died at the age of 88 on Monday, will be buried in St. Mary Major on Saturday after the funeral ceremony held in St. Peter’s Square.
Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, who has been serving as the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem for years, led the rosary prayer. Dozens of faithful and members of the clergy attended.
The Vatican said Friday that around 250,000 mourners filed through St. Peter’s Basilica over the three days to pay their last respects as Francis lay in state in a simple wooden coffin.
