STORYLINE:
San Lorenzo, one of Argentina’s biggest football clubs, honored its most famous supporter, Pope Francis, on Saturday—the same day his remains were laid to rest in Rome.

The club and its fans organized a series of tributes ahead of San Lorenzo’s match against Rosario Central for the Argentine First Division tournament.

In the stands, the yellow and white of the Vatican flag blended with San Lorenzo’s iconic blue and red, while images of Pope Francis appeared in photographs and graffiti both inside and outside the stadium.

Children from Scholas Occurrentes—the NGO founded by Pope Francis in 2013 to promote education and social inclusion—were invited onto the field, where they posed for pictures with a statue and a painting of the pontiff.

San Lorenzo’s players also wore special jerseys adorned with a patch reading "Together for Eternity," symbolizing the enduring bond between the club and the Pope.

The Professional League swiftly approved the patch, making it an official part of the match, according to artist Lu Sedova, who presented a painting depicting Francis wearing the club’s colors.

"I believe he was a great global leader who helped make San Lorenzo known worldwide. That’s why this tribute is so important for us," Sedova told The Associated Press.

San Lorenzo’s stadium, located in Buenos Aires’ Bajo Flores neighborhood, stands near the area where Jorge Bergoglio—who would later become Pope Francis—was born.

A lifelong supporter, he held membership number 88,235 with the club and never hid his deep affection for San Lorenzo.
