STORYLINE:
Cardinals visited St. Mary Major Basilica on Sunday to pay their respects at the tomb of the late Pope Francis.

They also went through the Holy Door and celebrated the vespers together.

Cardinals who travelled for Francis’ funeral will be meeting regularly this week ahead of the conclave as they start to chart a way forward for the 1.4 billion-strong Catholic Church.

No date has yet been set for the conclave, but it must start by May 10.

They are scheduled to meet on Monday for their 5th congregation, a gathering of all members of the College of Cardinals taking place after the pope’s death and before the start of the conclave to discuss major church affairs.

All cardinals who aren’t infirm take part in this meeting to also discuss a date and preparations for the conclave, under oath and in secret.

Francis chose his place of burial in St. Mary Major Basilica, near an icon of the Madonna that he revered, because it reflects his “humble, simple and essential" life, the archbishop who administers the basilica said Friday.
