Turkish authorities clamp down on protesters at May First demonstrations in Istanbul | DW News

Police in Turkey have detained hundreds of people in Istanbul after confrontations between protesters and authorities at May First demonstrations. The streets have been closed around the city’s Taksim Square, where protests have been banned since 2013. Metro lines were also closed and ferries suspended. These latest demonstrations echo the disruption that followed the March arrest of President Erdogan’s main political rival – Istanbul mayor Ekrem Imamoglu.
