STORYLINE:
Some 1,500 Catholic pilgrims gathered in the Chilean city of Colina on Sunday for a traditional festival held on the first Sunday after Easter.

Many wore the traditional outfit of the "huasos," Chilean countrymen and skilled horsemen, including extra long spurs and intricately carved, closed wooden stirrups.

Known as Divine Mercy Sunday, Catholic priests distribute communion to the sick and elderly who were unable to attend mass over Easter.

The celebration is known as the Cuasimodo, or Quasimodo, festival.

The name is not related to the famous hunchback, but is thought to derive from Latin: “Quasi modo geniti infantes,” or “like newborn children.”

The festival is said to date back to colonial times, when priests relied on huasos to protect them from bandits.

On Sunday, the pilgrims accompanied a priest on a journey to deliver communion, with many faithful and participants dressed in their finest attire.

The festival is recognized as the most important in the country, due to the large number of pilgrims that take part, and also for being the only one that is accompanied only by horses, without any motor vehicles.

As a sign of respect, horseback pilgrims replace their hats with blankets tied to their heads and capes over their shoulders.
