STORYLINE:
China on Tuesday said it is willing to develop relations with Canada based on "mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit" following Canadian federal election.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun made the remarks at a daily briefing in Beijing when asked about the vote.
The Liberal Party is projected to gain more of Parliament’s 343 seats than the Conservatives in Monday’s contest.
It isn’t clear yet if the Liberals will win an outright majority, at least 172, or will need to rely on one or more smaller parties to pass legislation.
Elections Canada said it has decided to pause counting of special ballots — cast by voters who are away from their districts during the election — until later Tuesday morning.
The Liberals were leading or elected in 168 seats when the counting was paused, four short of a majority.
Separately, Guo said China and Japan were in "close communication" on advancing the protection of giant pandas.
“We welcome Japan’s continued interest in international cooperation on giant panda conservation, support China’s giant panda conservation efforts, and jointly protect this flagship species,” Guo said.
Guo dismissed U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s statement that he believes it’s up to China to de-escalate the trade tensions, calling on the U.S. to give up "threatening and pressuring."
Bessend has said in a media interview that China’s exports to the U.S. are five times the U.S. exports to China, so China’s 125% tariff is unsustainable.
Finally, Guo once again called on India and Pakistan to "exercise restraint" after tensions spiked between the two countries.
