“This is the strangest election of my lifetime. It turned not once, but twice, and in totally unexpected ways. … And a party is now the government of Canada that five months ago we would have been patting down the headstone and piling on the earth and saying, ‘Go with God.’”

“Much to Canadians’ absolute shock, Trump indicated that he wanted to absorb Canada in the United States and started speaking about Canada in a really insulting way and about its prime minister, Trudeau. And so, that stimulated a strong nationalist reaction.”

“But Trump is still there. And on the day of the election, he once again said that he wanted Canada to join the United States. And so, we can anticipate that Trump is going to be a factor in Canadian politics for the foreseeable future. And that means that Canadian politics are going to be chaotic and disrupted in the way that American politics are chaotic and disrupted under Donald Trump.”

STORYLINE:
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberal Party won the federal election, but the issues swirling around the nation’s southern neighbor persist, an expert said Tuesday.

“Trump is still there,” historian Robert Bothwell said.

Monday’s electoral victory capped a stunning turnaround in fortunes fueled by U.S. President Donald Trump’s annexation threats and trade war.

But then Trump launched a trade war with Canada and suggested the country should become the 51st state, outraging voters and upending the election.
