STORYLINE:
Rapeseed fields are currently dominating the spring scene in Germany with their bright flowers.
The yellow colour of the blooms serves mainly to attract pollinators such as bees, which are crucial for seed and oil production. The oil itself is extracted from the seeds.
The typical cabbage-like smell of the rapeseed flower is caused by mustard oils, which act as natural protective substances and give the plant from the cruciferous family its characteristic scent.
The resulting products have long since gone beyond traditional edible oil and protein animal feed: modern processes and technological developments are opening up completely new perspectives for rapeseed processing – from bio-based plastics and cosmetic ingredients to plant-based protein for human nutrition.
In two to three weeks, the flowering period will be over again.
