"50 years ago, the decades long Vietnam War ended on April 30. In the years that followed, Vietnam repaired itself. Now armed with lessons from the past, it grew. Its economy is now an exporting powerhouse. It mended its relations with its former foe, the U.S. which is now a comprehensive strategic partner, the highest diplomatic status that it gives to any country."

STORYLINE:
50 years ago, the decades-long Vietnam War ended on April 30.

Since then, the country has rebuilt and converted itself into an exporting powerhouse. It mended its relations with its former foe, the U.S., which is now a comprehensive strategic partner, the highest diplomatic status that Vietnam gives to any country.

But today, as millions pour into Ho Chi Minh city for the independence day parade, the country has new economic and geopolitical realities to grapple with.

Vietnam is caught in the cross hairs of Donald Trump’s tariff plans, and at the same time, has had to face a new reality of USAID funding being slashed.

These funds were crucial for war legacy programs, such as Agent Orange clean ups and support for victims of the poison, which have been the bedrock of the U.S. and Vietnam’s friendship.

The U.S. State Department said that war legacy projects like clearing dioxin at Bien Hoa or demining programs in central Vietnam remain “active and running,” adding that it would conduct assessments for the resources needed for their continuation.
