STORYLINE:
Activists and workers clashed briefly with police as they scrambled to remove barricades during a May Day rally in Manila on Thursday.

Hundreds of anti-riot police blocked protesters from getting close to the Presidential Palace.

Thousands of Filipino workers marched in the streets of the capital Manila to mark International Labor Day.

Protesters and union workers reiterated their calls to the government to increase the minimum wage and protect jobs in the country.

“Tariff wars and the policies of Trump is a reminder that we should develop our economy comprehensively. Said protest leader Mong Palatino.

“We also have a reminder to our negotiators, instead of offering a zero tariff the first priority should be the protection of our producers, of our local production base, local company and businesses.” Palatino added.

May Day usually brings both protest rallies and celebrations rallies marking Labor Day worldwide.

Special Assistant to the President for Investment and Economic Affairs, Secretary Frederick Go last month said that the Philippines will negotiate the 17 percent reciprocal tariff imposed by the United States on the country’s exported products even if it is expected to only have a minimal impact of around 0.1 percent on the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) in the next two years.

The Philippines received the second-lowest tariff in the Asian region
