STORYLINE:
Indonesia’s President Prabowo Subianto joined the May Day rally in the capital, Jakarta, to hail and greet tens of thousands of workers who celebrate the international Labor Day on Thursday.

He was cheered through the streets by workers who gathered among tight police and military presence in Jakarta’s National Monument park, chanting slogans against the controversial new Job Creation Law and rampant corruption.

About 200,000 Indonesian workers were expected to take part in traditional May Day marches across Southeast Asia’s largest economy on Thursday, said Said Iqbal, the president of the Confederation of Indonesian Trade Unions.

Indonesian workers demanded the government eliminate outsourcing rules, a minimum wage raise, protection for domestic workers and migrant workers abroad, Iqbal said.

Subianto occasionally shook people’s hands when arriving and throwing hundreds of t-shirts to the crowd while standing in the sunroof of a white van when leaving the event.

In his remarks, Subianto said that he had tried to run in the presidential election five times before he was finally elected, and union workers were always behind him to support, and that "I’m the president of workers, farmers, fishermen and poor people.”

He vowed to eliminate corruption.
