6. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Jassim al-Helfi, participant in May Day rally:
"We demand the rebuilding of the Iraqi economy, the rebuilding of factories. Without a real economy built on industry and agriculture, we can’t have stability. The unity of the labor movement, a lack of interference in union work or attempts to break the union movement, rewarding wages and combating unemployment – these are our demands. Each one of these demands is simple, but it is tough for the ruling clique to achieve because it is wrapped up in corruption and deals. That is the whole issue."

9. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Intisar Alewi, participant in May Day rally:
"On this day, we recall the struggle of the working and laboring class which has done a lot to rebuild the Iraqi economy. At the same time, we demand that all relevant parties and institution take care of this class and lift them out of poverty, misery and the bitterness that they live through every day due to injustice and the non-implementation of the labor law correctly, and because of exploitation and oppression. We are also making specific demands for the protection of women and providing equal job opportunities that bring them dignity and social justice."

STORYLINE:
Hundreds of workers and activists in Baghdad marked May Day on Thursday with rallies calling for better pay and improved working conditions.

The holiday, also known as International Workers’ Day or Labor Day, marks the struggles and achievements of workers and the labor movement around the world.

The day is a public holiday in Iraq and an opportunity for workers to make demands.

Jassim al-Helfi, a participant in a May Day event in Baghdad, called for "rewarding wages" and a reduction in unemployment.

The workers in the Iraqi capital chanted as they marched onto the city’s landmark Tahrir Square.

"We demand that all relevant parties and institution take care of this class and lift them out of poverty, misery and the bitterness that they live through every day due to injustice," said Intisar Alewi, another participant.

Alewi also called for equal work opportunities for women to "bring them dignity and social justice."

From Tokyo to Turin, Taipei to Paris, tens of thousands marched in May Day rallies on Thursday.

Many of the rallies spotlighted growing anger over U.S. President Donald Trump’s aggressive tariff agenda and fears of global economic turmoil.
