STORYLINE:
Hong Kong marked the Labour Day holiday with a 12-minute drone show over the sky of Victoria Harbour, with the backdrop of the iconic skyline.
The drone performance featured images of local traditional celebrations like the Tam Kung Festival.
The festival was traditionally celebrated by the fishing communities in Hong Kong.
The "Qilin" dance performance is the highlight of the celebration.
The mythical creature, "Qilin" symbolises good fortune and peace in the local tradition.
There were also images of the local tradition of the "peace" buns that are part of the upcoming festival of “Cheung Chau Bun Festival,” which is observed on May 5.
The tradition of eating buns that day is meant to bring peace and safety.
The bun scrambling competition is the highlight of the bun festival with participants scrambling up towers of buns more than ten metres high.
Whoever gets the most buns, of the greatest value, wins.
The origin of the festival is a tale of a plague that hit the outlying island of Cheung Chau centuries ago, and people developed rituals to appease the gods and overcome the plague.
Hong Kong doesn’t have any rally or demonstration calling for improving conditions or protection for workers on Labour Day.
The city is expected to be packed with hundreds of thousands of visitors, mostly from mainland China, to enjoy the five-day Labour Day "golden week" holiday.
Zeng Yu-hua visited Hong Kong from Huizhou, Guangdong province and enjoyed the drone show.
"The most spectacular part is the bun scrambling competition showing two people climbing to the top to grab the ‘peace’ buns," she said.
