STORYLINE:
Thousands of workers protested in the capitals of Peru, Ecuador and Brazil on Thursday to demand better working rights on May Day.

In the Peruvian capital, Lima, a long column of demonstrators was heavily guarded by the national police.

During the demonstration, trade union leaders denounced the existence of exploitation and even what they called slavery in the labor field.

"We say no to exploitation of labor and slavery, neither in the public nor in the private sector, neither in the countryside nor in the city," said Manuel Coronado.

In Quito, the main trade union organizations marched with a clear objective, that of asking the recently re-elected president Daniel Noboa for a labor and pension reform that would give greater stability to the country’s Social Security Institute.

"We are here to tell the government that has won the elections that obviously the people are not going to give them a blank check," said union leader Isabel Vargas. "We are going to demand that they fulfil their campaign promises and that labor rights are respected."

Workers also demonstrated in Rio de Janeiro to demand better working rights on May Day.

Among the key issues raised during the protest was the call to end the 6×1 shift system, which requires workers to work six consecutive days with only one day off.

Aline Silva, 38, who works in the pharmaceutical industry, emphasized that the schedule prevents workers from having a dignified life outside of work.

"Our main demand here is to end the 6×1 schedule, so that workers can have a life beyond work, so that people can live as human beings, not as modern-day slaves," she said.
