STORYLINE:
A large column of smoke was seen billowing over the skyline of the Gaza Strip on Friday, as Israeli airstrikes over the strip continued.
The cause of the smoke wasn’t immediately known.
Israel has been striking homes, shelters and public areas daily since resuming the war with Hamas last month.
It has cut off the territory’s 2 million Palestinians from all imports, including food and medicine, for nearly two months.
U.N. food stockpiles have run out and aid groups say thousands of Palestinian children are malnourished.
The Palestinian Health Ministry says more than 2,270 people have been killed in Gaza since Israel resumed the war.
In total, Israel’s offensive in Gaza has killed more than 52,000 Palestinians, the majority of them women and children, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.
The ministry does not distinguish between militants and civilians in its count.
Since Israel ended the ceasefire last month, its forces have seized more than half of the coastal territory.
The war in Gaza started when the Palestinian militants stormed into southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, killing some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducting 251.
