STORYLINE:
Thousands of Cubans gathered Thursday in Havana’s Plaza de la Revolucion to commemorate May Day, reviving a tradition that had been put on hold in recent years.

The march took place against the backdrop of a deepening economic crisis and resumed the longstanding custom of parading past the iconic square, home to sculptures of revolutionary commanders Che Guevara and Camilo Cienfuegos, as well as independence hero José Martí.

Posters identifying workers’ associations, slogans, Cuban flags, and many signs showing the face of the late former president Fidel Castro passed in front of a stage on which the current president, Miguel Díaz-Canel, was standing.

Also present was the 93-year-old leader and former president Raúl Castro, dressed in his traditional olive green uniform.

Similar demonstrations were held in the main cities across the country.

In the last five years, Cuba has experienced a severe economic crisis marked by food and medicine shortages, reductions in social benefits, and daily cuts to basic services such as electricity and water.

Rising prices and the partial dollarization of the economy have become the reality for citizens, resulting in increased emigration, particularly to the United States and Europe.
