STORYLINE:
Workers demonstrated in Rio de Janeiro on Thursday to demand better working rights on May Day.

Holding banners and chanting, they gathered at the central Praça da Cinelândia, denouncing the exhausting working hours many face.

Among the key issues raised during the protest was the call to end the 6×1 shift system, which requires workers to work six consecutive days with only one day off.

Aline Silva, 38, who works in the pharmaceutical industry, emphasized that the schedule prevents workers from having a dignified life outside of work.

"Our main demand here is to end the 6×1 schedule, so that workers can have a life beyond work, so that people can live as human beings, not as modern-day slaves," she said.

The proposal to abolish the 6×1 schedule is currently under discussion in Brazil’s National Congress but has made little progress.

The proposal suggests reducing the workweek to 36 hours, spread over four days.

In addition to criticism of the 6×1 schedule, the protest also highlighted the precarious conditions faced by gig economy workers in delivery platforms.

Marcelo da Cruz, a delivery driver for iFood app for five years, criticized the recent R$0.50 ($0.10) increase in delivery fees, which he believes is insufficient given the rising cost of living and out of step with the company’s profits.

"This 50-cent increase in the delivery fee is absurd," he said. "iFood is a billion-dollar company, and its couriers are struggling, starving."

The protest concluded peacefully, with organizers promising further mobilizations in the coming months to pressure Congress to make progress on labor rights issues.
