“As part of our core team, we have experts looking at every aspect of the electoral process, looking at things like election administration, the laws for the election (Romanian interpreter translates). We also have experts looking at the media environment here in the country, and also the political environment, and also the campaign and how the campaign is conducted, both in person but also in the press as well as online.”

STORYLINE:
Officials from international security watchdog OSCE were monitoring polling stations in Romania on Sunday, as the country holds a rerun of its presidential election.

Romania’s political landscape was shaken last year when a top court voided the previous election after far-right outsider Calin Georgescu topped first-round polls, following allegations of electoral violations and Russian interference, which Moscow has denied.

Head of the election monitoring delegation Eoghan Murphy said the OSCE had “experts looking at every aspect of the electoral process."

"We also have experts looking at the media environment here in the country, and also the political environment," Murphy added.

Like many countries in the E.U., anti-establishment sentiment is running high in Romania, which has experienced high inflation and cost of living, and has a sluggish economy.

The election redo is a crossroads moment for Romania as it seeks to restore its democracy and retain its geopolitical alliances, which were strained after the election fiasco plunged the European Union and NATO member country into its worst political crisis in decades.

The decision to annul the election and the ban on Georgescu’s candidacy drew criticism from U.S. Vice President JD Vance, Elon Musk, and Russia, which publicly supported his candidacy in the rerun.

Eleven candidates are vying for the presidency in Sunday’s vote, which is expected to go to a May 18 runoff.

A median of polls suggests that hard-right nationalist George Simion will enter the runoff, likely pitting him against Bucharest Mayor Nicusor Dan, or the governing coalition’s candidate, Crin Antonescu.
