STORYLINE:
For the Catholic faithful across Latin America, Pope Francis was iconic for many reasons.
Not only is Catholicism the major religion in nearly every country of the continent, but Pope Francis was the first Pope from Latin America, rising to the highest seat of the church from his native Argentina in 2013.
Francis visited a number of Latin American countries including Mexico, Cuba, Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Bolivia, Paraguay and Brazil. However, he never returned to his native country which was a sore spot for many.
The Pope drew huge crowds. In Peru he travelled to both the country’s capital and the Amazon where people travelled from Brazil and Bolivia to meet him. In Brazil, the Pope’s first overseas trip, his mass at Rio de Janeiro’s famous Copacabana breach drew three million people, according to authorities’ estimates. In Mexico the Pope travelled widely, his visit including Mexico’s border with the United States, Ciudad Juarez, Chiapas and the capital.
