4. SOUNDBITE (English) Dina Akhmadeeva, Assistant Curator, International Art, Tate Modern:
“The exhibition “Do Ho Suh: Walk the House” is the first large-scale monographic exhibition in London for a whole generation, 23 years, surveying the breadth and depth of Suh’s practice across the last 30 years, and it encompasses a series of large scale installations structured around the three cities that Suh has called home over the course of his life, Seoul, New York and London. And through these large-scale works, videos and more intimate works on paper, Suh explores and the exhibition explores the spaces that we carry with us as we move through both time and place.”

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Dina Akhmadeeva, Assistant Curator, International Art, Tate Modern:
“Colour is and isn’t at the same time important to Suh’s practice. I think the important thing to talk about here is the fact that he uses ready-made fabrics and maybe it’s fabric more widely or textile more widely that’s more important than the specific colours. So, what’s interesting about the fabric that’s used for those architectures is that this an organza fabric that’s used to create clothing, usually. And so his exploration of the relationship between body and architecture actually takes on this proximity, he thinks about clothing a house. And colour, these ready-made fabrics in let’s say ready-made colours are then used by Suh and each colour does for him have a kind of code to a specific place in which he has lived and worked previously. But significantly that is not necessarily always revealed.”

14. SOUNDBITE (English) Tabish Khan, art critic:
“So, Do Ho Suh’s exhibition is engaging, it’s bright, it is colourful, it immersive. People will want to come and see it for that reason, but there is something deeper to it as well. It’s tied into memories, memories of places. So, we all remember the places we lived in, the places where we grew up, but we might have lost them, they’re sort of faded memories to us. But he’s immortalised them all into artworks, he’s recreated doors right down to light switches, plug sockets, fire extinguishers, from the places he remembers the places he lived. And we can now walk through it. So, it’s almost like we’re experiencing the life of the artist without the artist being there.”

17. SOUNDBITE (English) Tabish Khan, art critic:
“So Tate Modern has been suffering in terms of visitor numbers, it hasn’t really got back to pre-pandemic levels, and exhibitions like these that are really engaging will hopefully bring more people back to experience contemporary art.”
