13. SOUNDBITE (Amharic) Bami Haileyesus, ranger:
"Illegal wildlife poachers believe that rangers are the ones preventing them from accessing wild animals, including meat, ivory and tiger skins. As a result, they think that eliminating rangers is justified, which is why conflicts occur."

15. SOUNDBITE (Amharic) Bami Haileyesus, ranger:
"Poachers are battling us for ivory and other resources, resulting in the loss of many rangers’ lives. When I was recruited, I had three friends who were recruited with me, but now, I am the only one alive. They were tragically killed by poachers, and I survived with a wound on my hip."

18. SOUNDBITE (Amharic) Arbor Lele, head of Mago National Park:
"In Mago National Park, there was a tragic incident in 2021 when seven elephants were killed at once. It is deeply painful to see elephants targeted and killed. Unfortunately, some members of the local pastoral community kill these animals for the sake of fame. They also hunt animals like buffalo and giraffes, believing that those who kill such giants are regarded as heroes within the community."

20. SOUNDBITE (Amharic) Arbor Lele, head of Mago National Park:
"Rangers dedicate their lives to protecting nature. As experts deeply connected to the natural environment, they risk their own lives to save animals. They are profoundly sensitive to the needs of wildlife and are committed to eliminating threats to their survival. Tragically, this dedication often makes them targets, resulting in their deaths from bullets fired from various directions as they strive to protect wild animals."

Keeping Ethiopia’s wildlife safe. But at what cost to themselves?

Rangers at Mago National Park patrol this area every day.

Their task? To protect animals like the buffalo and elephants that roam this lush habitat.

But it’s a job fraught with danger.

Bami Haileyesus has been a ranger for 11 years.

"We face many challenges, including attacks on wildlife, and beyond that, there are also attacks on rangers," he says.

Rangers are the last line of defence between animals and the poachers that hunt them.
