STORYLINE:
The annual Bun festival on Hong Kong’s remote island of Cheung Chau kicked off on Monday, starting with a traditional parade.
Children dressed as legendary deities and historic characters were carried on stands above the gathered crowds as the parade made its way through the island’s narrow lanes.
The main tradition is a parade of children in costume called “Piu Sik”, literally translated as “floating color” parade.
The Bun Festival is one of Hong Kong’s oldest and most colorful festivals, which began about a century ago after a deadly plague devastated the outlying island of Cheung Chau.
Residents followed the local Taoist tradition of imploring the deities for help and used white steamed buns as offerings to drive away the evil spirits.
Nowadays, residents and visitors to the island eat the white steamed buns as part of the celebrations.
They are called “Ping On Bao”, meaning “peace” buns, and are stamped with two red Chinese characters “peace” and “safety.”
As part of the festivities a “bun-scrambling” competition will be held at midnight where climbers race up a tower covered with plastic buns.
Whoever gets the most buns of the greatest value wins.
It was suspended for decades after an accident in 1978 when a collapse injured many. The tradition restarted in 2005.
