STORYLINE:
Iran’s Assembly of Experts, a clerical body that picks the country’s next supreme leader, held an annual meeting in Qom on Monday.

Head of the assembly, Ayatollah Mohammad Ali Movahhedi Kermani, condemned Israel during his opening speech.

"I don’t think in today’s world there is any free person who considers occupiers of the noble Quds human beings, with all the oppression and crimes they are committing," he said.

Clerics in the 88-seat assembly serve eight-year terms after being elected by popular vote.

The body’s real power will emerge when a successor to supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, now 86, is required.

It works like an Iranian version of the Vatican’s College of Cardinals, when cardinals gather to pick a new pope.

The Assembly has done this only once since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

In 1989, it picked Khamenei to succeed his late mentor, the Islamic Revolution patriarch Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.
