“Mr Crin Antonescu, the candidate backed by coalition failed to enter round two, hence the coalition agreement was fulfilled only partially. So today after we saw Romanians vote, the coalition didn’t meet its objectives so no longer has credibility. I will propose to my colleagues that the Social Democrat party withdraws from this coalition. If my colleagues vote for the withdrawal, normally, me, as coalition prime minister, I will put my resignation in front of the Romanian interim President”

STORYLINE:
Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu says he is considering handing in his resignation, a day after the governing coalition’s candidate failed to advance to the runoff in the presidential election rerun.
"After we saw Romanians vote, the coalition didn’t meet its objectives so no longer has credibility. I will propose to my colleagues that the Social Democrat party withdraws from this coalition. If my colleagues vote for the withdrawal, normally, me, as coalition prime minister, I will put my resignation in front of the Romanian interim President,” Ciolacu told reporters as he arrived for a meeting of his Social Democratic Party (PSD).
The coalition’s candidate Crin Antonescu trailed in third place in Sunday’s vote with 20.07%, behind Bucharest Mayor Nicusor Dan’s 20.9%, and far behind that of hard-right nationalist George Simion, who won decisively with 40.9%.
The outcome of Sunday’s first-round vote exposed deep anti-establishment sentiment among voters and signalled a seismic power shift away from Romania’s traditional mainstream parties, triggering a new phase of political turmoil.
Sunday’s rerun was held months after a top court annulled the previous race following allegations of electoral violations and Russian interference, which Moscow has denied.
The presidential role carries a five-year term and significant decision-making powers in national security and foreign policy.
Simion said that his hard-right nationalist AUR party is “perfectly aligned with the MAGA movement,” capitalising on a growing wave of populism in Europe after US President Donald Trump’s political comeback.
AUR rose to prominence in a 2020 parliamentary election, proclaims to stand for “family, nation, faith, and freedom,” and has since doubled its support.
