STORYLINE:
Shah Rukh Khan is a Bollywood megastar, with legions of fans the world over. At 59, with decades of fame under his belt, he’s finally making his Met Gala debut — in Sabyasachi.
Bollywood celebrities aren’t strangers to the Met Gala, but it’s rarer for a male actor to appear. In recent years, Alia Bhatt, Deepika Padukone and crossover star Priyanka Chopra Jonas have represented the Hindi film industry at the annual fundraiser.
Khan, toting a cane and necklace with a large K, credited his attendance to Sabyasachi, and said he informed the designer he only wore black and white.
Asked how his look interpreted this year’s theme – based on the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s spring exhibit, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” – Khan again credited Sabyasachi.
"My designer, Sabyasachi, he thought of it. And for him it’s an expression of freedom and trying to be resolute and resilient against things that can oppress you," he explained.
Admitting he was not previously aware of the fashion movement Black dandyism, he continued, "but I got to know now. So the last 20 days, I got to understand what it was and being an actor, I thought it was very interesting how the resolve to change things without repression or anger, but have exuberance of art in it."
Fellow acting icon Diljit Dosanjh wore a regal turban and cape embroidered with a map of Punjab on the back, to stand for photos next to the outfit’s designer, Prabal Gurung.
Indian fashion designer Manish Malhotra wore a floor length black coat, embroidered with gold.
