STORYLINE:
Chilean President Gabriel Boric received the final report from the Presidential Commission for Peace and Understanding during a ceremony Monday at La Moneda Palace, highlighting it as a step toward resolving the long-standing conflict between the state and the Mapuche people.
The commission, which concluded its work with seven votes in favor and one against, was tasked with proposing long-term solutions, as well as measures of recognition, justice, and reparation for victims.
"Through this process, you have demonstrated something very important: that this was not an immeasurable or insurmountable problem," Boric said.
Boric stressed that violence and terrorism have no place in this process and reaffirmed the right of all residents—Mapuche and non-Mapuche—to live in peace.
