4. SOUNDBITE (English) Gal Nakel, Tel Aviv resident:
"I think it (the expansion of the Gaza operation) kills the hostages and I don’t want to believe that my own government would leave people behind. And I think that’s the most important mission the country has and we let them down, this is what I think."
5. Pictures of hostages hanging from tree
6. SOUNDBITE (Hebrew) David Bouganim, Tel Aviv resident:
"I don’t think it’s good. I used to love Bibi (Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu) very much. I was really blind to him. But I see that day after day and month after month, that it’s already approaching years after years – and our friends are still there, and it hurts me. I don’t understand what he’s doing anymore, you understand. In my opinion, he has already lost, Bibi. I supported him strongly until recently but, in my opinion, he has already lost. He has lost his way, lost his way."
7. Pictures of hostages on banners, text reading (Hebrew): "Don’t leave me behind"
8. SOUNDBITE (English) Amir Tal, Tel Aviv resident:
"I think that the situation is deteriorating. We are going to lose hostages. We are going to lose soldiers. And we don’t see the aim, where we are heading. This government is not leading us somewhere. We are turning around, going in circles. The biggest aim of this government is to stay in power and we have to pay for it – we, our kids, our grandkids. That’s it. I’m very, very disappointed from this government."

10. SOUNDBITE (English) Eden Israeli, Jerusalem resident:
"I think that this expansion is going to cost the lives of our hostages. I think that this is… What they’re doing now should have been done on October 10th, 2023 and that the whole way the government has been handling the situation is disgraceful. I’m very, very worried. My son is about to enter in Gaza in the tank corps, and I’m worried about him and his friends. I’m worried about the civilians in Gaza, and I’m, most of all, worried about our hostages."
11. Israeli flags
12. SOUNDBITE (Hebrew) Haim Hoisman, Jerusalem resident:
"It’s not good for the hostages and it’s not good for Israel, and it’s not good for anyone. It’s only good for those who want to prolong the life of this government."
13. SOUNDBITE (Hebrew) Yoram Azar, Jerusalem resident
"I am simply torn between these two things, so I cannot say for sure if it’s good or not. On one hand, it might be good to end this saga. On the other hand, it’s not good that more soldiers here might fall, and who knows what will happen with the hostages. So it’s a very controversial issue. I hope, I hope that things will change without all this entry (of soldiers into Gaza). Let’s see if the (US) President (Donald Trump) comes to us. I hope he will reach some sort of compromise. I really hope that he will do that."

STORYLINE:
The Israeli Cabinet’s approval of plans to seize the Gaza Strip and expand the military operation is sending shockwaves through the region.
Palestinians are exhausted and hopeless, pummeled by 18 months of heavy bombing.
Families of Israeli hostages still being held in Gaza are terrified the possibility of a ceasefire is slipping further away.
News of the plan came Monday, hours after the military chief said the army was calling up tens of thousands of reserve soldiers.
