"In America we spend a very small amount on our public media system. So the idea is really that we’re underfunded. So the idea of taking away any of the very small amount of federal funding we get will certainly harm our ability to make democracy in America healthier."

13. SOUNDBITE (English) Paul Maassen, General Manager, WWNO:
"What happens when the power goes out for long periods of time? The infrastructure goes away. It’s cell phone service, it’s internet service. All the stuff goes down eventually when the power is out for for multiple days and what happens is radio becomes the backbone, becomes the backup to the backup. People can listen to radio when the power is out. It’s hard to watch TV when you don’t have power in your house. For us to continue to provide information during that time costs money, requires infrastructure, requires investment over the course of years. That’s where the Corporation for Public Broadcasting funds help us to be able to be prepared for something like that."

STORYLINE:
After Hurricane Helene devastated Asheville, North Carolina, the sound coming from open car windows as residents gathered on a street at the top of a ridge trying to get cell service last fall was Blue Ridge Public Radio.

And as they stood in line for water or food, the latest news they had heard on the station was a frequent topic of conversation.

Now, public radio stations are being targeted for cuts by President Donald Trump, who this week signed an executive order aimed at slashing public subsidies to NPR and PBS, alleging “bias” in the broadcasters’ reporting.

"In rural areas and smaller communities it makes a huge difference" says NPR affiliate WWNO General Manager Paul Maassen.

New Orleans isn’t necessarily rural, but the value for having public radio is vital for the area as locals depend on their NPR affiliate to provide weather updates during storms.
