STORYLINE:
China called for restraint on both sides on Wednesday after India fired missiles into Pakistani-controlled territory in several locations.
At least 26 people including a child were killed as of midday Wednesday and Pakistan’s leader called it “an act of war.”
Pakistan said it had shot down several Indian fighter jets in retaliation as three planes fell onto villages in India-controlled Kashmir.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said at a briefing that China was "concerned" by the ongoing situation.
“China finds India’s military operations early this morning regrettable,” Lin said.
“India and Pakistan are and will always be each other’s neighbors that cannot move away. They’re both China’s neighbors as well. China opposes all forms of terrorism,” he said.
Lin added Beijing would be willing to work with the international community "to play a constructive role in easing the situation".
India said it struck infrastructure used by militants linked to last month’s massacre where gunmen killed 26 people, mostly Indian Hindu tourists, in the Indian-controlled portion of Kashmir.
India blamed Pakistan for backing the attack but Islamabad denied the accusation.
