STORYLINE:
Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa claimed Wednesday that the Gaza Strip is now a “famine area”.

“The documented reports issued by international and UN institutions, the field indicators, the manifestations of hunger and thirst, and the daily scenes of emaciated children’s bodies and the pain emanating from the tents of the displaced and from the rubble of homes and hospitals all indicate one stark truth, which is that Gaza has now become a famine area,” he said in a press conference on Wednesday.

He called on the international community to implement UN resolutions that prohibit the use of starvation as a weapon of war against civilians and added that Israel is responsible for “this deliberate humanitarian disaster”.

Israeli strikes across Gaza killed at least 59 people, including women and children, hospital officials said on Wednesday,

It comes as Israel prepares to ramp up its campaign against Hamas in a devastating war now entering its 20th month.

The strikes included one attack on Tuesday night on a school sheltering hundreds of displaced Palestinians, which killed 27 people, officials from the Al-Aqsa Hospital said.

It was the fifth time since the war began that the school in central Gaza has been struck.
