STORYLINE:
All eyes will be on the Sistine Chapel chimney on Wednesday to see if black or white smoke emerges on the first day of the conclave to choose the next pope.
With the world’s media watching on, a seagull managed to take a prime viewing spot on the chapel’s roof.
Some 133 Vatican cardinals are due to begin their deliberations to select the new pontiff on Wednesday afternoon.
The conclave was called after Francis died on April 21 at age 88.
After voting, ballots are burned in a special stove — black smoke signals no decision, while white smoke means a new pope has been chosen.
The longest conclave in history lasted nearly three years, but it’s reasonable to assume that this one will be much, much shorter.
Cardinals this week said they expect a short conclave, though it will likely take at least a few rounds of voting.
A first vote is expected on Wednesday, but there is no requirement for it to be held.
