STORYLINE:
Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro called on his supporters to join a demonstration in Brasilia on Wednesday, demanding amnesty for those convicted over the January 8, 2023 riots, when far-right demonstrators stormed government buildings in a failed attempt to overturn the election results.

Bolsonaro himself is expected to stand trial in the next few months at Brazil’s Supreme Court for allegedly being tied to the coup attempt.

A crowd of supporters wearing Brazilian flag colors followed the former president through the capital’s Monumental Axis, arriving close to the national congress.

“Amnesty is a political and private act of the Brazilian parliament. If the parliament voted, no one can interfere in anything,” said Bolsonaro on top of a truck.

On Sunday, Bolsonaro was discharged from the hospital three weeks after undergoing surgery for a bowel obstruction.

Before undergoing surgery, the right-wing leader had been preparing for a trip across northeast Brazil to promote his Liberal Party’s agenda, eyeing next year’s presidential election in Brazil, though he himself is barred from running.

The region traditionally has been a political bastion of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
