“I think it’s great. It’s about time we got some Catholic presence here in the United States. Not always looking for someone from, you know, other countries. Not that there’s anything wrong with it. I just think it is nice. I think that it will help the Catholic Church grow a little bit here.”

“Well, he’s got a challenging and arduous task ahead of him because I think a lot of people put expectations on a Pope when in reality he’s the father of the church, he has the follow church doctrine, but does have the ability to reach spiritually across every faith, across every nation, across ever race to really try to help us remember we all are our brothers, we’re all in the same game, we all want the same thing, peace and unity and love.”

STORYLINE:
Pope Francis brought Robert Prevost to the Vatican in 2023 as the powerful head of the office that vets bishop nominations, one of the most important jobs in the Catholic Church. On Thursday, he ascended to become Pope Leo XIV — the first pontiff from the United States.
Prevost, 69, had to overcome the taboo against an American pope, given the geopolitical power already wielded by the U.S. in the secular sphere.
Outside the White House on Friday, Americans reacted to the announcement of the first American Pope.
Sara Sieberg, from Minnesota, said she think’s its pretty cool.

Christie Geier-Pratt, visiting from St. Louis, Missouri, said the announcement was shocking.
“I mean I remember in first grade sister Serena telling me you know right after Pope Paul the sixth was elected that probably will never be an American, so here I am a few years later, and there he is, and he’s kind of the best example, I think, of what a Pope should be,” she said.
And Charles Zoltak, from Annapolis, Maryland said it’s about time there was an American Pope.
