Trump Meets Most China Trade Demands, Claims EU ‘Nastier than China’ | The Opening Trade 05/13

Xi Jinping’s decision to stand his ground against President Donald Trump could hardly have gone any better for the Chinese leader. The dramatic reduction exceeded expectations in China, and sent the dollar and stocks soaring — providing some much-needed market relief for Trump, who is facing pressure as inflation looks set to speed up at home. Chinese equities also surged.

Saudi Crown Prince welcome Trump with a grand display of pageantry in the kingdom, aiming to monetize their relationship and make himself the Middle East’s go-to man.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the European Union suffers from a “collective action problem” that’s hampering trade negotiations, downplaying the possibility of a quick agreement with the US’s largest trading relationship.
“I think the US and Europe may be a bit slower,” Bessent said when asked at a Saudi-US Investment Forum in Riyadh about progress on tariff talks.

The Opening Trade has everything you need to know as markets open across Europe. With analysis you won’t find anywhere else, we break down the biggest stories of the day and speak to top guests who have skin in the game. Hosted by Anna Edwards, Guy Johnson and Kriti Gupta.
