3. SOUNDBITE (English) Anne Dietrich (right) and Ann Sainclair (left), tourist from Washington D.C., U.S.:
Dietrich: "We would love to see somebody who embodies the same spirit as the as the Pope who recently passed, somebody who really says, as he did a lot, who am I to judge, right? Somebody who really is just showing love. I don’t know what else to say. Love and a real broad spirituality that envelopes everybody, right?"
Sainclair: "Yeah and that embraces really, I would say, our shared humanity, so really thinking about people across the globe and wanting the best for everybody not only in certain countries but wanting people in every single country to live a life that’s fulfilling and joyful. I think that the old Pope really embodied that and hopefully this new Pope will as well."
Dietrich: "And a Chicago boy! Yes, come on Chicago, we love to see that."

5. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Isabel Anta, tourist from La Rioja, Spain:
"It has been a fantastic and providential experience. We come from a journey, from studies from Spain, and we have had the luck, immense luck to celebrate in the cathedral of Notre Dame the spectacular news of Habemus Papam. Furthermore, it has been an election that will give us a lot of peace worldwide and is a man of great, great heart. American of origin also partly South American, partly Spanish and French and Italian. He also has French and Italian ancestry. So grateful for this fantastic and providential news on this day."

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Allison Jaynes, tourist from Iowa, U.S.:
"It would be great if he was like Pope Francis. I’m hoping that but it’s hard to tell because I don’t know him at all. I don’t know much about him, so he might be more conservative, more progressive, but hopefully more progressive. It’s a good time for America to have some progressive energy."

STORYLINE:
Visitors to the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris shared their thoughts on the election of Chicago-born Cardinal Robert Prevost as the new pope.
Isabel Anta, from La Rioja, Spain, said hearing the news was a "fantastic and providential experience."
"Furthermore, it has been an election that will give us a lot of peace worldwide and is a man of great, great heart," she added.
Allison Jaynes, from Iowa, said she hopes Pope Leo XIV will be "like Pope Francis."
"I’m hoping that but it’s hard to tell because I don’t know him at all," she said.
The Chicago-born missionary who spent his career ministering in Peru and took over the Vatican’s powerful office of bishops was elected the first pope from the United States in the 2,000-year history of the Catholic Church.
In many ways, Francis saw Prevost as his heir apparent. But there had long been a taboo against electing a pontiff from a country whose geopolitical power loomed so large in the secular sphere. Prevost, a Chicago native, was seemingly eligible because he’s also a Peruvian citizen and lived for years in Peru, first as a missionary and then as an archbishop.
