"I got the phone call that there was white smoke coming out of the chimney in Rome so I went downstairs, turned on the television, and watched the proceedings going on. I called my niece to let her know there was white smoke coming out, and we watched together and then we saw the curtains move and then we saw the cardinal come out and announce who the Pope was. She started screaming because it was her uncle and I was in the moment of disbelief that this cannot be possible, because it just isn’t it’s too far from what we thought would happen. So I was in a period of disbelief and then as he came out to talk then we knew this was real. And I guess a sense of tremendous pride came over me, but then also How’s he gonna handle this, not only the sense of pride, but the huge responsibility that now is on his shoulders."
