STORYLINE:
Thousands of people thronged Gaza’s remaining charity kitchens on Friday in search of a cooked meal, but many returned home empty-handed as food supplies dwindle due to Israel’s total blockade on vital supplies reaching the territory.

Men, women and children stood in line to try to fill their containers with food but only some ended getting a meal of cooked rice.

Hani Abu Al-Qassim, who runs a kitchen in Khan Younis, told The Associated Press that more than two-thirds of those who came looking for a meal on Friday returned home with nothing.

Israel’s ongoing blockade of humanitarian assistance for Gaza has forced several aid groups over the past weeks to close down amid the shortages.

On Thursday, the leading aid group U.S.-based World Central Kitchens shut its community soup kitchens as it faces empty warehouses and no replenishment of supplies in the war-battered enclave.

The aid group that was serving 133,000 meals per day said there is almost no food left in Gaza to cook.

The ongoing hunger is threatening Gaza’s population, already battered by 19 months of war.

In April, the World Food Program said its food stocks in Gaza had run out under Israel’s blockade, ending a main source of sustenance for hundreds of thousands of Palestinians in the territory.

Malnutrition and hunger are becoming increasingly prevalent in the Strip as Israel’s total blockade enters its third month, and aid agencies say supplies to treat and prevent malnutrition are running out.

Israel imposed the blockade on March 2, then shattered a two-month ceasefire by resuming military operations in the territory on March 18.
