STORYLINE:
French President Emmanuel Macron led a ceremony in Paris on Thursday marking the 80th anniversary of VE (Victory in Europe) Day.
The president laid a wreath in front of a crowd at the statue of General Charles de Gaulle, who led the French Resistance against Nazi Germany in World War Two.
A presidential motorcade drove up Champs-Elysees to Arc de Triomphe, followed by Republican Guard on horseback and a marching band. Macron then arrived in front of the Arc de Triomphe in a military vehicle.
In front of a crowd, including WWII veterans, Macron presented the Legion of Honor to Jean Daikhowski, a 98-year-old former Resistance fighter, before the Patrouille de France performed a colorful flypast to end the commemorations.
