11. SOUNDBITE (English) Monsignor Walter Rossi, Rector of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception:
"I believe that his opening words will tell us much about his future as pope and his tenure as pope, where he was calling immediately for peace. He extended peace to people, to their homes, to their families, to the world. So peace is obviously a priority of his. And he spoke about communication and building bridges. And so I think he also wants to be a unifier for the world."

STORYLINE:
The largest Catholic church building in North America is celebrating the election of the first American Pope Leo XIV by displaying a large U.S. flag on it’s bell tower and the colors of the papacy, yellow and white, on its front facade.
The Rector of National Shrine in Washington Monsignor Walter Rossi was "very surprised" that Cardinals selected their first U.S.-born pope, Chicago-born Augustinian missionary Robert Prevost.
"I’m pleased. I’m happy. But the pope is the pope for all people, not just for Americans. And that’s the most important part. He’s the pope for the world," Rossi told the Associated Press outside the Basilica Thursday.
Rossi compared Pope Leo XIV’s first public speech from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica similar to an inaugural address for a president in that it indicates his future tenure as pope.
