President Donald Trump said the US would explore normalizing relations with Syria after the toppling of longtime autocrat Bashar al-Assad, doubling down on a pledge to lift sanctions against the country’s new government. Trump spoke after a brief meeting in Saudi Arabia’s capital with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa. Trump’s Middle East visit has also opened a floodgate of AI deals. The Trump administration is clearing a path for two key Persian Gulf allies to pursue their artificial intelligence ambitions — and some of the biggest US tech companies are seizing on that opening with plans to spend billions of dollars in the region.
Under agreements with the US expected to be unveiled in coming days, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are poised to win wider access to advanced AI chips from Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices that are considered the gold standard for running AI models.
Today’s guests: Arend Kapteyn, UBS Global Head of Economics and Strategy Research, Kamakshya Trivedi, Goldman Sachs Head of Global Foreign Exchange, Interest Rates & Emerging Market Strategy.
