"A former model testified that Harvey Weinstein sexually assaulted her when she was 16 and 19 years old. Kaja Sokola was on the witness stand facing questioning from prosecutors and then lawyers for Harvey Weinstein. She recounted her upbringing in Poland and how she came to the United States when she was just 16 years old to sign a modeling contract. There, she says, she met Harvey Weinstein and a few days later he invited her out to lunch to talk about her dreams of becoming an actress. However, instead of going to lunch, she alleges, Weinstein took her to an apartment where he sexually assaulted her. Four years later, she alleges that Weinstein assaulted her again, this time at a Manhattan hotel after she and her sister met Weinstein for lunch."

"Now, Weinstein isn’t charged with the first encounter, which happened in 2002. Kaja Sokola filed a lawsuit in which she first lodged those allegations and she received a financial settlement. Weinstein is charged with forcibly performing oral sex on Sokola in 2006, right before her 20th birthday. The other allegation is outside of the statute of limits, the legal time barrier that prevents charges from being filed. Now, Sokola did not testify at Weinstein’s first trial. That trial was held in 2020. She went to the authorities right around the time that trial was starting, but prosecutors didn’t really follow up on her allegations until Weinstein’s conviction in that case was overturned last year."

"Now Weinstein has pleaded not guilty. His lawyers in cross-examination on Friday pressed Sokola to talk about her aspirations of becoming an actor. And they are trying to lay out for the jury that she was using her relationship with Weinstein to try to make it big in Hollywood, that she was leveraging the studio boss and the suggestion from the defense attorney was that perhaps she felt if she had consensual sex with Weinstein that it would help open doors for her in her career. Sokola is expected to be back on the witness stand as the retrial continues next week."
