"I am very happy, as is every resident of Chiclayo. He has been our customer, and that will remain with us. I think he remembers the restaurant. Many times in the morning, he would come to eat fried pork, in the afternoons, he would have lunch, he liked the goat kid (cabrito) and the rice with duck, typical Chiclayo food. He always ate chicken chicharron in Las Americas sauce, which is something traditional in this restaurant. That is why I can attest that the Pope ate here. As the sign says: Blessed food. Food with faith."

STORYLINE:
Antes de que una votación en la capilla más famosa del planeta lo convirtiera en el pastor de 1.400 millones de católicos, León XIV fue un obispo que lavaba sus propios trastes, disfrutaba desayunar tortillas de maíz y jugaba tenis con otros religiosos de la ciudad peruana de Chiclayo.
Su nombre de entonces era Robert Prevost y, para quienes aún habitan las calles y aldeas empobrecidas de este punto en Sudamérica, sigue siendo uno más entre los suyos.
Chiclayo, a 14 kilómetros del Pacífico, es una ciudad con más de 800.000 habitantes y desempeña un papel vital como eje comercial de la costa norte de Perú. Tiene carreteras que la conectan con las montañas de los Andes y la Amazonía. Sus tierras circundantes son productivas en términos agrícolas.
Sin embargo, también enfrenta problemas sociales y alrededor del 20% de su población vive en la pobreza.
Ése fue el hogar de León XIV durante casi una década antes de que partiera a Roma en 2023, cuando el entonces papa Francisco le pidió asumir la presidencia de la Comisión Pontificia para América Latina.
Los vecinos de Chiclayo valoran que Prevost los recuerde pese a haberse convertido en papa.
Minutos después de haber salido al balcón más importante del Vaticano, en sus primeras palabras a las multitudes que lo vitoreaban en la Plaza de San Pedro, saludó a su pueblo peruano en español: “mi querida diócesis de Chiclayo, en el Perú, donde un pueblo fiel ha acompañado a su obispo, ha compartido su fe”.
