"The Musk Ox Farm is a nonprofit, and we’ve been located here on this facility in Palmer, Alaska, since 1986, and since then we’ve done an annual Mother’s Day celebration where we’re celebrating our human moms and our mama musk oxen. So, we open up to the public for one day to get to wander a select couple chutes and get to see these guys a little bit different than you can on our normal everyday business."

"Musk ox are an amazing Arctic critter that are made for the harsh Arctic here in Alaska and all over the circumpolar, and so we keep them here for both education and they give us their qiviut every spring. if you were to think about a musk oxen as a giant Arctic goat, so they’ve survived the last Ice Age. They’re very much their own thing, but their closest relatives here in North America is actually a mountain goat, and so they have lots of goaty tendencies with just a lot of extra weight behind them."

STORYLINE:
It’s one of Alaska’s favorite Mother’s Day traditions, getting up close and personal with animals that have survived the Ice Age.

All moms get a flower and free admission Sunday at the Musk Ox Farm in Palmer, about an hour’s drive north of Anchorage.

Once inside, they will have the chance to view more than 70 members of the musk ox herd, including Trebek, a young bull named after the late “Jeopardy!” host Alex Trebek, a benefactor of the facility.

Officials say it’s a great way to celebrate Mother’s Day with a musk ox who has just given birth to an adorable calf.

Mother’s Day is the traditional start of the summer season for the farm, which traces its roots back to 1964 and at several locations before moving in 1986 to Palmer.

That move put them on Alaska’s limited road system, provided easier access to grazing land than in tundra communities and allowed them to incorporate educational opportunities at the farm facility dwarfed by the nearby Chugach Mountains.

The very first year they were open in Palmer is when this tradition started, and now stretches over three generations.

Mother’s Day is the busiest day of the year, attracting over 1,500 visitors.

Musk oxen are Ice Age survivors, running around with saber-toothed tigers and mastodons, and they’re the ones that lived.

Their closest relatives to animals of today would be Arctic goats.

They are stocky, long-haired animals with a slight hump in their shoulder, a short tail and horns.

The last remaining animals by the 1920s were in Greenland and Canada.
