STORYLINE:
Buddhists in Southeast Asia are marking one of the holiest days of the year on Sunday; the day in which the Lord Buddha was born.
It is also the day he gained enlightenment and died.
In Myanmar’s largest city, Yangon, many devotees gathered at pagodas to pour water on the head of statues of Buddha, as a mark of reverence.
They also prayed and recited religious verses in front of Bodhi trees within the temple grounds.
Buddha is said to have gained enlightenment beneath such a tree.
Buddhism is the major religion in Myanmar.
The holiday is a rare moment of pause for the country, which is in the middle of a civil war, following the seizure of power by the military in 2021 and a determined fightback by a mix of forces opposed to their attempt to rule.
It was also rocked by a powerful earthquake in late March that caused widespread damage and killed more than 3,700 people.
