"We’re in Hostages Square in Tel Aviv just moments after Eden Alexander, the Israeli-American soldier was released from captivity in Gaza. He is now with his family in Israel. He was the last living American to be held hostage and the negotiations happened between the United States and Hamas in what was said to be a gesture of good will on Hamas’ part with the idea being that this was going to lead to a ceasefire and the release of more hostages. People here you can see they have gathered, they are celebrating, they have posters with Eden’s face on them, also with the faces of the other hostages. There are still 50 hostages in Gaza. Israel says that more than half of them are believed to be dead. You can see behind me there that clock that’s counting down the days that the hostages have been in Gaza. It’s more than 580 days that they have been held in captivity, but it is really unclear what’s going to happen going forward. Israel has said that it did not commit to a ceasefire, that while it will send a delegation to continue negotiations in Qatar, it will do so under fire and that it is going to continue to strike Gaza. So while the future right now is uncertain, the hope is that this is going to lead to a ceasefire, but it’s really unclear right now if that is actually going to happen."

STORYLINE:
An Israeli-American soldier held hostage for more than 19 months in the Gaza Strip has been released by Hamas in a goodwill gesture toward the Trump administration.

The deal could lay the groundwork for a new ceasefire with Israel.

The Israeli military confirmed that 21-year-old Edan Alexander was turned over to the Red Cross and then to Israeli forces.

Alexander’s extended family gathered in Tel Aviv to watch the release.

They cheered and chanted his name when the military said he was free.

His release was the first since Israel shattered an eight-week ceasefire with Hamas in March, unleashing fierce strikes on Gaza that have killed hundreds.
