STORYLINE:
Holocaust victims were commemorated during the March of the Living in the Hungarian capital on Sunday.
Participants of the annual March of the Living in downtown Budapest paid tribute to the hundreds of thousands of Hungarian Jews lost their lives at the hands of the Nazis.
"Remembrance is a collective thing. But it starts from within," Judit Rónai, one of the participants of the remembrance, said. "But I think it really weighs on a wider social level” she added.
Participants of the march first remembered the victims of the Holocaust at the Shoes on the Danube Bank, a poignant memorial and a monument to the Hungarian Jews who, in the winter of 1944-1945, were murdered by Hungary’s own fascist Arrow Cross party, whose death squads shot Jews en masse into the Danube River in Budapest.
The Nazis killed some 6 million European Jews during the Holocaust — nearly 10% of them from Hungarian territories.
At the outbreak of World War II, Hungary, then a kingdom, joined with Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy to become an ally of the Axis powers.
Hungary’s leader, Regent Miklós Horthy believing that Nazi Germany could help restore the country’s lost territories, cooperated with Adolf Hitler throughout World War II. Hungary instituted Europe’s first anti-Jewish laws in 1920.
However, despite existing anti-Jewish laws, Horthy resisted German demands to deport Hungary’s large Jewish population.
Fearing Horthy would defect to join the Allies, Hitler ordered the invasion of Hungary in March 1944, and the mass deportations began.
In less than two months between March and May of that year, some 435,000 Hungarian Jews, primarily from countryside cities and villages, were deported to Auschwitz in Nazi-occupied Poland, most of whom were sent to gas chambers on their arrival.
As the war approached its end, thousands of others were murdered by Hungary’s own fascist Arrow Cross party, whose death squads shot Jews en masse into the Danube River in Budapest.
Chief rabbi Tamás Verő said: "I, as well as the entire Hungarian society, must remember what happened to the generation of our parents, our grandparents, what they did, and what they did not do in the past.”
This year’s March of the Living also marked the 80th anniversary of the end of WWII in Europe.
