“So, this group is just the first of what the administration says is going to be a much larger number of white South Africans who are eligible and will be accepted into the United States as refugees under a program that the administration has suspended for really about 99 percent of the rest of the world. It is highly unusual for a group like this to come in under the refugee program, just as it has been highly unusual since the president took office for any group of refugees to come in. But President Trump has decided that these people, these Afrikaners, white south Africans, are in need of special attention and he prioritized their processing under this program, and so within three months of him saying that these people, this or group of about 50, has already arrived, while refugee asylum seekers, refugee status seekers in other countries, notably Afghanistan, throughout the Middle East, Syria, other parts of sub-Saharan Africa are still not able to even be processed because the program remains suspended for the vast majority of the world.”

“The president made it clear that Afrikaners in South Africa, who are the victims of unjust racial discrimination, would be welcome to come to the United States, and he’s now delivering on that promise.”

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Matthew Lee, The Associated Press:
“Typically, someone who is granted refugee status or admitted into the United States under the refugee program, will be eligible to apply for U.S. citizenship after a certain period of time. It varies depending on the circumstances, but these people, if they decide that they want to stay in the U. S., would most certainly, after a period of some time, several years, be able to apply full on for U S. citizenship.”

STORYLINE:
The Trump administration is welcoming a small group of white South Africans as refugees, saying they face discrimination and violence at home.
That’s despite pushback from the country’s government denying they are facing persecution.
Associated Press reporter Matthew Lee says that it is highly unusual for a group like this to come in under the refugee program.
“But President Trump has decided that these people, these Afrikaners, white south Africans are in need of special attention and he prioritized their processing under this program, and so within three months of him saying that these people, this or group of about fifty, has already arrived,” Lee said.
The decision to admit the 49 people Monday also has raised questions from refugee advocates about why the group should be admitted when the Trump administration has suspended efforts to resettle people who are fleeing war and persecution and have gone through years of vetting before coming to the United States.
The group of white South Africans arrived at an airport just outside Washington on a private charter plane.
